HATCH FARM. 11 1881 map of area
Built in the 16th century with later alterations, it was part of the Kelvedon Hall Estate. The large pond at the front of the farm was a convenient spot on the Ongar - Brentwood road for passing carters and drovers to water their animals. The farm consisted of 80 acres and was farmed by 2 men and two boys. James Newcombe also farmed the 'Poors Land' to the west of the windmill.

MILL AND MILL COTTAGE. 15 1881 map of area
The Windmill was the landmark of the common. The first mention of a mill on the site is in 1644. In 1768 the Post Mill was clearly in bad condition for it was leased rent free for 7 years providing the tenant put it in good condition. In the 1790s it was replaced with a Smock Mill. In 1830, the surrounding common land was granted to the tenant Richard Woodfine who later built a cottage adjoining the mill for the miller. In 1871 George Littlechild of Pump House Farm was the tenant.

POORS COTTAGES. 19 1881 map of area
Built in the 17th century, these 4 cottages and the adjacent 9 acres of land were owned by the Overseers of Kelvedon Poor, the parish charity. The cottages were rented out to the poorer members of the community providing they were of good character. The families who lived here tended to remain for several decades. In 1861, 30 adults and children were recorded as living in these four small cottages. Of the 9 acres: 6 acres were farmed by Newcombe of Hatch Farm and 3 acres were allotments for 'spade husbandry'.
