"West Thurrock and Purfleet Township. Population 785. A Sunday school in West Thurrock containing 56 children; another in Purfleet, consisting of 15. A day and Sunday school comprising 57 children. A day school for 60, and an evening school in which 7 receive instruction. The poorer classes have opportunities of educating their children."

1833

"West Thurrock and Purfleet. Population 804. Four Daily Schools: in three of which, collectively, are 46 males and 23 females; and in the other (commenced 1826) 2 males and 9 females. In these Schools the children are instructed at the expense of their parents. One Sunday School, supported by W.H. Whitbread, Esq., and attended by 26 males and 30 females."
