News from the past - FIRE ON KELVEDON COMMON
- On Friday evening week a fire broke out in a skittle shed at the rear of the beerhouse on the Common occupied by John Maryon. From the elevated position the flames were seen for miles around and the Ongar fire engine and a number of police quickly arrived on the Common. Plenty of water was at hand, and by the evergetic efforts of those in charge of the engines and a body of labourers, the flames were prevented from reaching the dwelling house near. The skittle shed and an adjoining one were destroyed, and a new tumbrel was much burnt and 25 ferrets - in which the landlord of the beerhouse is a dealer - were burnt to death..........The fire is believed to have been caused by children playing with matches......
