DODDS FARM. 39    1881 map of area
Also known as 'The Willows'.
Built in the 16th century. In 1871, the farm consisted of 50 acres. In the earlier part of the century it was farmed by a tenant farmer, but later a farm bailiff was installed and the building was split into two cottages. It was up for sale in 1850 and it was described as being "close to good roads, market towns and the railway". In 1878, J.Royds of Brizes, the owner, granted a small part of the land for the building of a new Wesleyan Chapel; and in 1894 an area of the farm was donated by his son, the Rev. C.L. Royds, to the Church of England for the site of the new church of St.Nicholas.

BEACON HILL COTTAGES. 42    1881 map of area
Farm labourers cottages. John Boreham, according to parish charity records, was sent to sea in 1825 at the age of seven. It seems, however, that in fact he later joined the army just as his father had done before him. John attained the rank of sergeant before his discharge. He was employed on the Kelvedon Hall Estate as a gamekeeper.
