HOUSE.34 1881 map of area
17th century building with later additions situated on part of the former common land. The land was probably too small to generate sufficient income from farming, so the occupiers also had other income such as cow dealing, or as in 1851, the occupier was the Miller at Bently Common Mill which was situated nearby. At the time of the 1871 census, Mr Pain was in St.lves on business.

HOUSE - COTTAGE - ROSE COTTAGE
37 1881 map of area
All these properties were built after enclosure of the common land in 1834. The house which was later called Kumra Lodge, and Rose Cottage, were substantial houses occupied by middle class families. For instance: Colonel Henry Conway in 1851 and William Edmonds, a Manchester Warehouseman, in 1881. Clearly, improved transport connections with Brentwood and the railway to London encouraged these middle class families to move to Kelvedon Hatch.
