HOUSE. 27 1881 map of area
Probably the oldest house in the parish: built in the 15th century. At the beginning of the century it was occupied by the Smith family who farmed the surrounding 3 acres, and who were also hay carters. The Porter family moved to the house in
the 1850s. They were agricultural labourers and wood men employed by the Kelvedon Hall Estate.

This house, which was built in the 17th century as the servant quarters for Brizes, had been occupied by the Keating family since at least 1826. John Keating was a tea and tobacco trader. After his death in 1835, his wife Elizabeth, son Richard, who was a surveyor, and daughter Anna, remained living in the house. Some of their income was from the rents of various cottages they owned in the village.

The land comprising Brizes was granted by the Lord of the Manor in the 15th century. The present house was built in the 1720s. John Royds had inherited the land after the death of Louisa Dolby in 1868. Royds then began to purchase surrounding
land including Dodds Farm and part of the adjacent parish of Doddinghurst.

OLD CROWN HOUSE. 30 1881 map of area
Farmhouse dating from at least the 18th century. The house, garden, orchard, farm yard, out-buildings and land consisted of a total of 17 acres. The 1871 occupier, Samuel Archer, had been the builder in Kelvedon Hatch for at least 30 years. The house may also have been used as a school. In the 1890s the house was extended and rebuilt by the new owner, John Newman F.R.I.B.A.. Mr Newman gave his architectural services free of charge and designed the new St.Nicholas' Church.
