EAGLE INN. 20 1881 map of area
Built at the beginning of the 1800s. It was not licensed until at least 1830. In 1845 - 48 the publican, William Gandy, was also the miller at the windmill across on the common. In the 1860s, William Skingley was also the wheelwright; in 1875
the Post Office owner, Thomas Norris, was also the publican. In fact, throughout the century there was regular turnover of publicans, most of whom supplemented their income by other work.

A shoemaker's residence and workshop. The remaining three terraced cottages situated behind consisted of three rooms each with a common wash house. They were occupied by farm labourers.

POST OFFICE. 24 1881 map of area
A substantial brick house built about 1788. At first it was occupied by the wheelwright and then later by a blacksmith. Later in the 19th century it was the grocer's, basketmaker's and sub-post office. The busy Mr Norris in 1875 also ran the Eagle P.H. It later became known as 'The Guardsman Stores'. It was later demolished.

Two terraced cottages. One of these was equipped by James Judd as a carpenter's workshop. He was the carpenter as well as the undertaker.

The house was built in the late 1830s. However, to the left of the house is the Smithy which was established in at least the 17th century. For over 30 years (1849 -1881) the Brown family: father and sons, were the parish blacksmiths' and wheelwrights'. This photograph was taken at the begining of the 20th century.
