Education in Kelvedon Hatch - Events in schoolroom 1893 - 1898
After its construction in 1878, the schoolroom became an important venue for parish meetings and social events. It was seen as the sober alternative to holding meetings in public houses.
These are just some of the events held in schoolroom between 1893 and 1898 (taken from the Parish Magazine of the time).
In 1894 the Local Government Act introduced parish councils. It took responsibility for non-church matters away from the church vestry system. Parish Council Meetings were held in the schoolroom.
Church events. Before the building of the new church of St Nicholas, the schoolroom was the venue for many church events:
Church of England Temperance Society meetings. One of them was a magic lantern show on Portsmouth. 120 members attended.
Band of Hope. Another temperance organisation. Set up for children to teach them the evils of drink. Meetings included a lecture on 'the effects of drink on brain, lungs and heart'. 50 members attended.
There were also rummage sales, lectures, including one on 'keeping your homes healthy'; and Sunday schools.
Parish events included: a Lecture on Canada with magic lantern slides. A village soiree and dance with two person from each house in the parish invited. This attracted 120 guests who enjoyed tea, cakes, buns, and coffee. There was also a visit of a ventriloquist and conjurer.
Every year payments for allotments were made to the Lord of the Manor. This was turned into a social occasion with tea, cakes, tobacco, and songs. Also a distribution of the parish charity was made in the schoolroom. This was formerly held in the Eagle PH when probably much of the hand-out quickly passed across the bar.
The Queens Jubilee celebrations of 1897 were held in the field to the rear of schoolroom. A description of this and other events are on the Parish Magazine page.
