Prior to the 20th century, there were three large estates in the parish, and in the south of the parish was a large area of common land which is now the site of the modern village. This area of common land was caused by the underlying soil (Bagshot Sand); the remainder of the parish is London clay.
During the 19th century the common land became enclosed and farmed; later the modern village was built upon it. In the 1970s, the parish was expanded to take in part of Doddinghurst parish which lay on the east side of the common.
Around the common land were sited a number of cottages and houses of the various tenants and landowners who had been given permission to enclose the Lord's waste. Dominating the common land was a windmill. Before the advent of more sophisticated farming techniques, the common land would have been used for grazing and firewood.
