It has been announced that the Friends Reunited Group which includes Genes Reunited has been sold to brightsolid, an online innovation business owned by DC Thomson.
brightsolid also owns findmypast.com (which operate the official 1901 and 1911 Census websites respectively in association with The National Archives) and ScotlandsPeople in partnership with General Register Office for Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon.
The sale is subject to clearance by the competition authorities.
GenesReunited, launched in 2003, is currently the UK’s largest family history website with 9 million members worldwide and over 500 million names listed in family trees created online and in the census database.
FindMyPast.com was also launched in 2003 and now has 650 million family history records. The recent release of the 1911 census has no doubt improved their popularity even further.
It will be interesting to see how this developments in the forthcoming months. Whether one will disappear with the records amalgamated into the other, or whether GenesReunited will remain more of a community based site, while Findmypast provides the historical records.
What ever happens, joined together this will certainly make them the principal source for UK genealogical records, ousting Ancestry.co.uk from that position.
