Back to History of High Laver

  1. I am the local historian of Batcombe in East Somerset. In the early 17th century we were a hot spot of extreme Puritanism, and almost won the Civil War single handed.
Our leading Puritan Devine at the time was Richard Bernard (very troublesom) Our records suggest that he had a daughter Mary who is supposed to be the wife of Roger Williams, the “Seeker” who emigrated to the Massechusetts Bay Colony in 1631 and later founded the Rhode Island Colony for which he was famed.
Other records suggest that he married Mary BArnard at High Laver. Do local records indicate that this lady came from Batcombe in Somerset, or was she your local girl of High Laver ?
