The 1911 census is now available through Find My Past, but having found the record you want and paid for a copy of the original household form, there is nothing more frustrating than being unable to read the occupation or birthplace. Perhaps the copy is unclear, or the handwriting is poor and to our modern eyes is indecipherable.
A possible solution may be found using what are called Occupation and Birthplace Codes. When the census returns were being completed ready for tabulation, the enumerator had to assign each occupation and birthplace provided a three digit code. In the vast majority of cases these appear on the household form.
