Hearth Tax Returns, Kelvedon Hatch.
The Hearth Tax was a tax levied from 1662 until 1689. They are useful to local historians as they indicate the size of the house and name of the occupant at the time they were assessed. The tax, with certain exemptions, was two shillings on each hearth which was collected in two installments at Lady Day and Michaelmas. This return for 1665 is from a microfilm copy held at the Essex Record Office.
Where possible the house to which it refers has been identified and linked to more information on the house.

William White occupied this cottage at the time of the Hearth Tax. According to the return, it had one fireplace. Compare this with the medieval Kelvedon Hall (since demolished), which had 16 fireplaces.
