CHICKNEY, a small parish, near one of the sources of the river Chelmer, 3 miles South West of Thaxted, has only 59 inhabitants, and 700A. 2R. 32P. of land, mostly belonging to Mrs. Anne Cranmer, the lady of the manor, which belonged to Ralph Peverell, at the Domesday Survey, and afterwards passed to the Bourchier, Parr, Collyn, and other families.

The Church (Virgin Mary,) stands on a commanding eminence, and has a stone tower, containing two bells, and crowned by a shingle spire. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £10, and in 1831 at £170, is in the patronage of Mrs. Cranmer, and incumbency of the Rev. Henry Howard, M.A., of Quendon, who has 46A. 3R. 14P. of glebe, but no parsonage.
