BULPHAN, or Bulfan, is a pleasant village and parish, 3 miles North West of Horndon-on-the-Hill, and 7 miles South by East of Brentwood, containing 254 inhabitants, and 1651 acres of land, descending westward to a rivulet, where it has some low land, called Bulphan Fen. Barking Abbey held the manor till the dissolution, after which it was given to Edward Bury. P.Bonham, Esq., is now lord of the manor, but John Bury, T. Woollings, and several other proprietors have estates here, chiefly copyhold.
The Church (Virgin Mary,) is a small ancient structure, with a wooden belfry and spire. On the south side of the chancel are some remains of a chapel. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £23, and in 1831 at £345, is in the patronage of J.S. Hand, Esq. and incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Mills, who has 15A. of glebe and has a good residence.
